Of course not! Pet CBD oil is completely different from THC. CBD oil from hemp contains no more than trace amounts of THC. According to what’s legally required it has less than 0.03 percent THC. So little, in fact, that it would be impossible for a dog or a cat to become high when using it. CBD oil comes from hemp, but CBD oil is not marijuana.
Cats and dogs can take CBD oil for the same reasons that their humans do. Their endocannabinoid systems, according to all available research, are very similar to humans. CBD oil for pets can be used for anxiety or stress. It’s great for long car rides when a pet may become anxious. For older pets or pets with joint pain pet CBD oil may be very helpful, as well as for a whole host of other reasons.
Pet CBD oil works with your furry friend’s endocannabinoid system. Because CBD is a cannabinoid, it helps to supplement a pet’s natural cannabinoids, which helps the endocannabinoid system to become stronger.
The endocannabinoid system is really just a bunch of cannabinoid receptors. And although pets produce their own natural cannabinoids, they can also use CBD oil or cannabidiol. It is known as a phytocannabinoid (plant-based cannabinoid) and can supplement the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
Pet CBD oil, like all CBD oil, is made up of cannabinoids found in cannabis. It is also known as cannabidiol and is widely recognized for its possible benefits to the health of dogs and cats.
Cannabis is the genus name for both marijuana and hemp. The term itself is not necessarily interchangeable with marijuana. In fact, almost all pet CBD oil today comes from industrial hemp, which contains very little THC, the cannabinoid responsible for causing a high. Most strains of hemp are rich in CBD and have less than 0.03 percent THC.
With CBD oil for pets we like to use a tiered system of dosing, depending on your pet’s size, as preferred by many experts:
- Tier 1: 0.05 mg per lb of bodyweight
- Tier 2: 0.125 mg per lb of bodyweight
- Tier 3: 0.25 mg per lb of bodyweight
Regardless of your pet’s size, you should start with Tier 1, using that dosage twice a day. After a week, move up to Tier 2 only if necessary, ditto for Tier 3.
So, for example:
The following examples are based on Tier 1 dosing:
- For pets up to 25lbs - give them up to 1.25 mg twice a day
- For pets between 25 – 50lb - give them between 1.25 to 2.5 mg twice a day
- For pets between 50 – 75lb - give them between 2.5 to 3.75 mg twice a day
Of course, you’ll need to do some calculation on how many mg of CBD oil there are per drop. On average, Medipets CBD products have between .05 mg and .2 mg CBD per drop.
