How Your Pet Can Beat the Heat with CBD

Posted on July 24, 2019

It’s getting so hot out there, isn’t it? No wonder they call it the DOG DAYS of summer! As the sun beats down on us, it’s important to keep an eye on our pets. They come with their own fur coats, so it’s up to us to help them beat the heat.

This Summer, Help Your Pet Beat the Heat with CBD

Avoiding the sun doesn’t mean we have to miss out on all the fun. CBD for pets is a great way to keep even the most anxious and excitable pets cool, calm, and collected while they’re indoors. There are solutions that work naturally to reduce anxieties your dog or cat might have about staying inside during the sunniest parts of the day. And with your furry friends in a better mood, you’ll have more opportunities to try out some new fun and games.

We put together a quick list of our top three favorite ways to beat the heat with our pets. Between chilled treats and brain-tingling puzzle games, these cool tips will keep pets healthy and happy all summer long.

Beat the Heat Tip #1 - Stay Indoors

Keeping pets indoors and out of the sun is the best way to beat the heat. Try to walk your dogs early in the morning and then again in the evening when the sun is setting. This way, your pup can actually run around and enjoy themselves without overheating.

We know it’s a summer bummer when you can’t spend the afternoon playing fetch, but staying indoors isn’t supposed to be boring. There are plenty of indoor games to keep pets entertained. Exercising the mind can be just as rewarding as a rambunctious run through the park.

Using a seek-a-treat puzzle toy will entertain your pet while distracting them from any anxiety they might have about being stuck inside. All you have to do is hide treats in the toy. It’s up to your dog (or cat) to sniff them out.

Depending on the kind of seek-a-treat toy you choose, your pup might have to slide doors with his nose or paws to get to the treats inside. Your cat may have to bat at their puzzle toy to knock the treats free. For the particularly anxious pet, try adding two or three CBD pet treats to the mix. The delicious CBD treats will soothe them and keep them calm until it’s cool enough to go outside again.

Beat the Heat Tip #2 - Always Drink Plenty of Water

When it’s too hot to go outside, you can never get enough water. Pet water bowls need to be refreshed twice a day in order to keep your animals hydrated and healthy. Don’t hesitate to put a few ice cubes in there either, especially if the heat index is really high.

Adding pet CBD oil to water bowls is a refreshing way for pets to beat the heat and stay hydrated. Add a few drops of CBD oil twice a day in a fresh bowl of water to cool off, calm down, and quench their thirst.

Pet lover’s treat: help your pet beat the heat this summer by turning their water bowl into a frozen treat! Add a little chicken stock and a handful of treats to a bowl of water and then stick it in the freezer. When it’s ready, let your pet lick to their heart’s content. The chicken flavor will be a tasty surprise, and the reward of the tasty CBD pet treats inside will keep them busy for hours.

Beat the Heat Tip #3 - Groom Your Pets Regularly

Grooming your pet will keep them cool in the summer heat. Regular brushing and baths will go a long way this summer, not only for the smell but for their health, too. And if your pet has long hair, be sure to tell your groomer to keep it short.

Pets with skin conditions will also benefit from regular grooming. Skin allergies can get irritated in the summer months when sweat starts to bother sensitive areas, and the heat can trigger skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Try rewarding your pup with a few CBD dog biscuits before or during his next summer bath. Being rewarded with treats can help encourage them to keep up with a regular bathing schedule, which, by keeping their fur and skin clean, can reduce the itchiness and irritation caused by heat or sweat.

Beat the Heat Bonus Tip - How to Recognize the Symptoms of Heatstroke in Animals

This summer, don’t take the risk. Staying indoors and drinking plenty of water is the best way to help your pets beat the heat and avoid heatstroke.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, bring them inside and cool them off with cool or room temperature water from a spray bottle. Then contact your emergency vet. Heatstroke is a serious emergency, and your vet may want you to bring them in immediately.

Here are a few common symptoms of heatstroke in animals you should learn to recognize:

  • Excessive panting or breathing distress

  • Bright red tongue and gums

  • Dizziness or staggering walk

  • Signs of confusion and delirium

  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea

Heatstroke is real, and these tips will definitely help you keep your pets safe and chill this summer. And we want to see you keep it cool with your pets!
