How Much Pet CBD Oil Is Too Much For My Cat?

Posted on July 16, 2018

We give pet CBD oil to our cats for all of the same reasons that we use CBD oil ourselves, but of course, pet CBD oil comes in much smaller doses.

But why Give Your Cat CBD oil for pets?

There are more than just a few reasons that people — and discerning felines — use CBD oil. For one thing, pet CBD oil interacts with the endocannabinoid system or ECS in pets the same way it does in humans. This vast system of neurotransmitters and receptors regulates a wide variety of bodily functions at a cellular level including sleep cycles, moods, pain response, appetite and much more. CBD oil also helps to regulate the immune system. It’s also a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. And it has antibiotic properties, to boot.

Here are some of the top reasons that a cat might ask their human for some pet CBD oil:

  • To reduce anxiety, aggression, or grumpiness
  • To stimulate appetite
  • To increase energy
  • To reduce pain
  • To help with digestion
  • To reduce seizures
  • To relieve skin conditions
  • To relieve nausea

There’s a lot more to say about this. You can read all about the benefits of pet CBD here. For this article, we’ll just talk about how much your kitten or cat should be given.

The Ideal Pet CBD Oil Dosage for Cats

A ten-pound cat requires far less CBD oil than a 200-pound human. But would the dosage be 1/20th in this case? Actually, it’s a bit more complicated than that. Although both cats and humans have an ECS, the expression of cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors can be quite different. Also, cat’s brains are far smaller in relative size, but they have more cannabinoid receptors in their brains — relatively speaking — and much of CBD’s action takes place in the brain.

The ideal Pet CBD oil dosage for cats also depends on the reason you might be giving CBD oil to your cat. If you’re just hoping to help kitty maintain good health, the dosage might be smaller than if you’re hoping to help with a serious illness.

A good place to start for general maintenance would be 2mg for every 10lbs of body weight, given once or twice a day.

It might take some time for you to notice the effects that CBD oil for pets has on your cat, especially when treating an ailment. If you don’t notice any difference in your cat’s behavior after a few days, you can increase that by 1 mg per day, but keep in mind it can take up to a month to see improvements in some conditions, so moderation and patience are key.

How Much Is Too Much Pet CBD Oil For Cats?

Although CBD oil for pets is non-toxic and won’t make them high, it’s not a good idea to give them high doses. Not only might it be a waste of money, but it could also conceivably make your cat a little too chill. We like our cats to be chill, be we also want them to be alert.

That said, you can’t do any real damage by giving your cat more than the recommended dosage should that happen. Just try not to overdo it.

It’s recommended that you not give your cat more than 5mg for every 10lbs of body weight.

What About Treating Cat Illnesses With CBD Oil For Pets?

If your cat is sick or dysfunctional in some way, Pet CBD oil may be a part of an overall wellness regimen to start making them feel better.

That said, it’s a good idea to take your cat to a qualified veterinarian who is knowledgeable on the subject and has experience in treating pets with CBD oil. You probably won’t find “CBD therapy” listed on your local vets’ website, but there are numerous places online such as cat-lover groups on social media sites where you can ask others in your area to refer you to someone.

This is not a requirement, however. If you’d like to stick with your own vet, then order some Pet CBD oil and take it with you to the vet and show it to them, and ask for advice.
