If you’re considering CBD for your pet, ask your vet. If you haven’t already had the conversation, you should. CBD (cannabidiol) is becoming popular among two-legged and four-legged creatures. It is showing promise as an alternative treatment for anxiety and pain. It’s normal for you to have questions for your vet; here are a few that MediPets gets asked often by our customers.

Dogs and cats also have an endocannabinoid system of neurotransmitters and receptors that send chemical signals to each other to keep the body in balance (homeostasis) and functioning normally.

How Will CBD Work For My Pet?

CBD has the same effect on animals as it does on humans. Dogs and cats also have an endocannabinoid system of neurotransmitters and receptors that send chemical signals to each other to keep the body in balance (homeostasis) and functioning normally. Your pet’s body produces natural mammalian cannabinoids that create calm, relieve pain, relieve hunger and create bliss. Plants have cannabinoids too, called phytocannabinoids, that help them maintain plant health and ward off predators. The interesting part of this is that although CBD is a plant cannabinoid, it works on human and animal receptors.

What Conditions Can CBD Treat For My Pet?

CBD can help with a whole host of veterinary issues:

  • Pain and Inflammation

  • Anxiety

  • Seizures

  • Sleep Issues

  • Arthritis and Joint Problems

Most pet owners use CBD to help pain, stress, and anxiety. Now, it’s hard to believe that a dog or cat would have issues sleeping, right? However, some pets do, and CBD can help. CBD works to bind with your pet’s receptors to create a sense of calm to relieve anxiety and help your pet be more relaxed. Puppies that are hyperactive or have separation anxiety do well with CBD, as do older dogs with arthritis and hip and joint issues. CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, so it helps with muscle soreness, joint pain and pain from injuries.

When pets take CBD over time, inflammation may be reduced. You will likely see your pet have more mobility and more energy.

MediPets CBD is derived from hemp, a plant bred to have only trace amounts of THC which is fully removed in our oil extraction process as we make the CBD oil that goes into MediPets products.

Is CBD Safe?

This is definitely a question we get a lot at MediPets. CBD is derived from natural hemp. It is non-toxic and it does not contain any THC, the compound that creates the “high” marijuana is known for. It is a common misconception that CBD will make a pet high. Some CBD products on the market are cannabis-based, but MediPets CBD is derived from hemp, a plant bred to have only trace amounts of THC which is fully removed in our oil extraction process as we make the CBD oil that goes into MediPets products.

It is important to use the proper dose of CBD for your pet, and that’s why MediPets has formulated mixtures for small, medium and large dogs, and why we developed this nifty CBD dosing chart. In general, veterinarians recommend about 5 mg of CBD per 50 pounds of pet weight, but it’s always a good idea to consult with your vet.

What happens if you give your pet too much CBD? The worst case scenario is they might get a little sleepy, and might experience a little tummy discomfort, but that’s about it.

Don’t expect an overnight cure either; CBD does take about a week or so to begin acting as the body gets used to it. You will start to see your pet go back to his or her normal self as the CBD benefits kick in. Pets with stiff joints become more mobile and anxious dogs begin to curb their destructive behaviors. Again, it’s all about CBD putting the body back in balance, no matter what is needed in the body.

How Do I Give CBD To My Pet?

MediPets makes several types of products—treats, sprays and drops—so you’re sure to find one that suits your pet. If your pet will let you, and not greet you with clenched teeth, you can spray or do drops right into the mouth. Many customers add the oil to the pet’s food, and treats of course are pretty easy. What pet doesn’t like a treat? Our treats come in so many flavors, your pet will bound to find one—from beef to blueberries—yep, we’re that good! Just know that treats do take longer to absorb than oils, but treats generally provide longer relief.

Other Considerations

Just like you would do with any human supplement, it is always a good idea to discuss ingredients for any pet supplement with your vet. At MediPets, what you see on the label is what you get. Our oil is derived from organic non-GMO hemp grown right here in Colorado and Kentucky by our incredible team of farmers.

When purchasing any pet CBD product, be sure to purchase one like MediPets that has been tested by an independent third-party lab. This is an industry standard to ensure safety and quality. If we say our product has no THC and contains a specific amount of CBD, our lab tests verify that, and they’re right on our website for all to see.

Definitely consider CBD for  your pet. Talk to your vet about any questions and concerns you have so that you can make an informed decision. We think you’ll be pleased with our MediPets line, and your pet will too. Happy trails!
