The CBD Pet Market Is Heating Up

As evidence continues to surface over the benefits of CBD for humans, more and more people are turning their attention to what it can do for pets. CBD oil for domesticated animals, most notably cats and dogs, is gaining considerably more attention from consumers, and, in turn, the cannabis industry. With pet owners spending more than $30 billion a year on supplements and other types of treatments, it is a fast-growing sector that businesses cannot ignore.

  • Anxiety

  • Appetite

  • Arthritis

  • Phobias

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. According to the site, many veterinarians have found that CBD can help older pets with joint pain. In the words of MinistryofHemp.com, “[CBD is] useful in treating acute ailments like sprains and strains, torn ligaments, bone breaks, and even during post-operative care to reduce swelling, pain, and stiffness.”

CBD works in both humans and pets through interaction with the endocannabinoid system. Science now shows that all vertebrates have one. According to one study CBD “binds to these receptors for a longer duration [in dogs], and evokes long-lasting therapeutic response without causing toxic effects.”

The idea of using CBD to treat cats and dogs is nothing new according to Marijuana Business Daily. Many pet owners prefer it as a treatment primarily because it lacks the psychotropic high of THC-rich marijuana. According to Marijuana Business Daily, because of this, and the potential size of the market, cannabis companies are coming out with more and more CBD-based pet products.

“Pets are the perfect patients for CBD,” said Alicia Whitt, a CBD sales specialist for Functional Remedies, in an interview with Marijuana Business Daily. “With pets, there’s no placebo effect, because pets have no idea what you’re giving them and what it’s supposed to do. It either works or it doesn’t.”

The key to claiming a share of the pet market is networking, according to Marijuana Business Daily. The pet crowd is tough to break into, and businesses have to reach them at a granular level. Animal shows and message boards are the best way to spread the word.

“People might have a high-stress, high-anxiety dog, then they give them CBD and within seven days they’re walking with them,” said Brian Tasker, director of sales for MYM Nutraceuticals, to Marijuana Business Daily. “It’s like a different animal. And people tell everyone they know.”
